To begin my user research I started off by developing a basic user survey. The main aim of the survey was to gather whether this is a viable problem and if my proposed goal would be useful at aiding this. The focus group targeted was Autistic People or carers of autistic people, I have received 20 responses so far with patterns being found in the feedback. With questions asked I aimed to find out main problem areas when dealing with new environments and also aimed to confirm my research that it’s common for autistic people to find new environments challenging.
100% of responses stated new environments were challenging, 65% said the unknown is the issue - causing fear and anxiety and 55% said high volumes of light/colours/sounds were the problem causing sensory overload. This gave me the reassurance I needed to know this problem was big and one that needed addressed. Also I asked about my proposed solution of using an App and VR, 60% of responses agreed the solution would be helpful, 22% stating they would have to try it to know and the remainder stating that the headset could be a trigger for users.
Some positive feedback included…
“My son has never experienced this but I do feel this would help as he would then have a chance to see what would be happening and this may help hopefully to alleviate any fears.”
“Yes as he would be more prepared for various places and situations.”
“Have never used one before. But would be eager to try this and see if it worked to take some of the stress out of unfamiliar surroundings.”
