Static sites are behind us as designers, to make sites more immersive we have started using interactions to make them dynamic and animated. This can include Macro Animations from page to page or Micro Animations on components such as buttons. Other examples include animations on scrolling, animated illustrations and including interactive data.
As we have moved through time, interaction is now for all devices, whether years ago it was stereotyped to just desktop format.
Some websites have developed great macro level interactions between pages.
Flat Guitar uses Macro level interactions with the movement from guitar to guitar vertically down the screen. It uses an overlapping style with new screens covering the old. The different colours relate back to the main guitar gallery and separate each page from the next. Other interactions include clicking on the guitars for a new page to open and play music relating back to each guitars sound. This is a good example of how separate pages can relate to each other.
Big apple hotdog uses a similar thought process as flat guitars, with different screens being separates by colour but they have the interactions set up different. The interface is set up so that when the user scrolls the illustrations overlap but text is pushed on with the old colour background. The flow is satisfying and will add greatly to this simple website's UX. It is a great tool for telling the story of the company, how they have developed and what products they offer. Users can move from page to page using the arrow buttons or by simply scrolling.
There are other great examples such as the one million deaths covid data illustration website which is striking to see on such a large scale, and another example is the Santar website which has everything reflecting one art direction and every detail is considered, with great interactions in each stage of the process.
There is a process behind micro interactions
These can include button colour changes, hover states, simple animations and much more - these things may seem small but they improve the user experience and help the website to feel fully immersive and memorable.
