When looking at marketing our product, we discussed how our product needs to appear on search engines such as Google. It is not a case of uploading a website and it instantly doing well, it is necessary to research into the market and what areas are picked up when people search for products on the internet.

As an example of this Chris advised to have a look at Google Trends, a website created by Google in 2006 to analyse patterns of people searching for particular topics over the years, in different parts of the world and what queries/searches are related to these.

As an example I looked up ‘web design’ in Northern Ireland.

As you can see, over the past year the interest in web design has increased overall but over some periods has had dips in interest.

On Google Trends, you can add other filters such as which area of Google the subject was searched on e.g. Google Images, along with being able to extend or decrease the search time from 12 months to 2 days/since 2004. It is a great tool for analysis of various topics from sports to design, this makes it possible for us to research and predict if there is currently any interest in the product we would be creating, and if so, to realise what words/phrases are regularly inputted into search engines such as Google.
